What types of building information are best portrayed in 3D views?

  • Which stakeholders require 2D views, and why?

I find 3D views to be best for displaying things in spatial relation to each other. This can be applicable from an architectural standpoint as designers consider convenience, accessibility, and comfort; however, the 3D view can also communicate important information regarding environmental factors like natural lighting and terrain views. This can help designers work toward energy sustainability and toward creating an immersive environment catered to the owners’ preferences.

On the other hand, workers like those in HVAC might benefit more from 2D portrayals because the tight spaces in which they work might make a 3D view overwhelming and unnecessary in communicating information. This is especially applicable because much of the work they do in ducts and with wiring occurs behind the typically visualized living space.

Give examples of how the building information for a specific location in the project needs to be filtered for different audiences and purposes?

Should your design ideas always be conveyed through photorealistic renders?

  • How does the level of detail in the rendering and its presentation affect the perception of stakeholders reviewing your design?

No, while photorealistic renders can be beneficial in helping stakeholders visualize a space, they can often be unnecessary. This has been discussed in the class in the context of longer loading times during the design stage. This delays the rest of the project timeline and drives up costs, thus limiting creative possibilities within the budget. With regard to the actual communication of information, the detail of rendering can often be interpreted to correlate with completion of the project and certainty in its presented design. This can be beneficial for stakeholders (such as architects and owners) who might be more interested in the actualized final product. However, it can on the other hand be confusing for those who might be more interested in a particular step of the project, with a start and end point that do not necessarily define the end result.

Name some applications where viewing the building and model information in virtual reality or augmented reality would be most beneficial?

  • Are there advantages to using a C.A.V.E as a virtual environment versus VR headsets?

How can schedule views be used to assist with procurement and model-based estimating?

Schedule views help document all of the items involved in a project’s construction. These items may vary by type, size, color, and more. Documenting this information along with the count in a single location accessible to all stakeholders makes orders convenient, especially if parts are subject to change. Additionally, associating each item with a cost that can be totaled in a spreadsheet format allows the entirety of the project to be collectively estimated. Therefore, if an owner or contractor decides to switch manufacturers for specific products, the items and their costs can all be changed collectively. These estimations improve the project preparation and management by allowing stakeholders to navigate project development changes more efficiently.
