Journal Entry For
Module 3 - Project Goals Targets & Strategies

Goal 1: Function

  • Measure:  the purpose of the building
  • Targets:
    • minimally acceptable value: museum
    • desired / target value: a space that makes people forget that they are in an enclosed building
  • Strategies:
    • the way to go about this to first think broadly about the need and purpose of the building, i.e., a museum. oftentimes, we lose sight of the function in pursuit of the form. my main goal throughout this project is to remember that I am designing an awesome museum that feels good to walk around in, and not just look pretty on the outside.

Goal 2: Aesthetics and Form

  • Measure:  the overall form of the building, measured by the final visual
  • Targets:
    • minimally acceptable value: organic, sculptural
    • desired / target value: highly efficient, harmonious sculpture that can be a city landmark
  • Strategies:
    • my approach to this is to think of a concept that may be related to the museum. For me, this museum should feel like there is no beginning or end to creativity, and hence, infinity will be a running theme for this building. This could be visible in the form, or even in the circulation pattern/movement of public within the space.
    • my concern is that the form will overpower function. in other words, the shape of the building should not dictate the function inside. rather, the form should be derived from the spaces within.

Goal 3: Sustainability

  • Measure:  metric varies
  • Targets:
    • minimally acceptable value: a building capable of adapting with time
    • desired / target value: efficient systems that tick maximum boxes towards green architecture
  • Strategies:
    • I would like to explore the concept of passive cooling further. The site I have chosen is in Bangalore, India. The overdependence on an already strained power grid is not desirable, and India excels at vernacular architecture that I can adapt to make a hybrid of, and use in my own building.
    • I would also like to look at the use of local materials, and incorporate influences of local art into my design. it can either be a tribute to local style, or stand out completely as a novel concept.
