Inspiration
Biomimetic architecture is a method of drawing inspiration from nature and applying it to architectural design. It emphasizes the integration of biological principles with architectural science to create efficient, environmentally friendly, and sustainable structures. This design method advocates imitating the form, structure, and function of natural organisms to achieve optimal adaptation to the environment.
In this unique shelter design, I combine the shape of a mouse's head with the shape of an insect's shell to create a distinctive and highly adaptable space. The inspiration for the mouse head shape comes from its compact and streamlined form, which helps reduce air resistance and improve aerodynamic performance. At the same time, the mouse head shape also reflects a high degree of space utilization in the design, allowing the interior of the shelter to make full use of limited space.
The shape of the insect shell provides a strong protective layer for the shelter. Insect shells are known for their lightweight, sturdy, and wear-resistant characteristics, which can ensure that the shelter remains stable in various harsh environments.
By combining these two excellent features from the natural world, this biomimetic architectural shelter demonstrates how to incorporate biological principles into design, achieving a high degree of adaptation to the environment and effective use of resources. This not only helps to enhance the functionality and comfort of the shelter but also contributes to sustainable development.
Modeling approach
code overview:
- Create the Base Line
The initial step involves determining the geometry and establishing methods to adjust the size or scale of the structure parametrically. To accomplish this, I generate the necessary lines for the geometry. I have devised three base lines in total, consisting of a central guideline and two sideline lines. The incorporation of integer sliders allows designers to resize or rescale the structure parametrically.
- Add Dynamic Geometry and Wave for the Shelter
In order to make the shape of shelter more aesthetic, I applied sine wave code to the shape. Meanwhile, I can adjust the shape of sinusoidal wave by adjusting ampititude and Number of curve definition points, so as to adjust the shape of shelter
- Add Ribs and Panels
I divided the three curves into smaller segments and transposed the coordinates of the points to create ribs for the structure. Additionally, I utilized an integer slider to swiftly modify the number of ribs. By segmenting the rib curves into smaller sections, I was able to acquire quad points for panel placement. I also employed an integer slider to quickly alter the number of panels on each panel. Parameters were added to adjust the overall colors for the rib as well.
For the Adaptive Components, I considered using Tube - 3pt - Tapered (Point1Radius, Point3Radius); For the Adaptive Panels, I contemplated employing Rect_Seamless Panel-4pt.
Parameters were also incorporated to fine-tune the overall frame width and height percentage of the panel, as well as the panel thickness.
The parameters that can be used to flex and dynamically change your structure
- Length and width of the structure
- Height of the structure
- Number of ribs and number of panels
- Colors for the ribs
Design a shelter is sooo interesting!
