Module 4 - Points to Ponder

What types of building information are best portrayed in 3D views?

  • Contractors and builders require 2D views in order to bring the architect’s vision to life. Without 2d views, the exact dimensions and layout of a structure is difficult to wrap one’s head around. 2D views allow for the most information to be shared to builders and for the flow of a building to be understood quickly and easily.

Give examples of how the building information for a specific location in the project needs to be filtered for different audiences and purposes?

  • Building information for a specific location in the project needs to be filtered for different audiences and purposes because not every audience is looking for the same specs. For example, a contractor might be looking for exact measurements of the slope of the hill on a site in order to best prepare for their build. At the same time, a client may not need as much detail about the site and would rather see a rendering of the site with little to no dimensions to understand how the space looks and feels.

Should your design ideas always be conveyed through photorealistic renders?

  • Design ideas do not always have to be conveyed through photorealistic renders. I think that for the final presentation it is nice to portray them with photorealistic renders, especially when presenting to clients who must understand how the space will look and feel. However, throughout the design process it is not necessary to constantly render a project to understand the impacts of your design. The level of detail in the rendering and its presentation affects the perception of stakeholders reviewing your design because it allows them to truly understand how they could use the space you are designing and envision themselves there through your renderings.
