Module 5 - Points to Ponder
What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations?
Using existing conditions as a stepping stone for modeling proposed additions ensures that the model is cohesive through time and place. It can be useful to know ahead of time what needs to be demolished of the original building as well as keep a continuous design style, with the same materials if desired.
What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling several proposed design alternatives for a portion of the building?
Keeping proposed alternatives in the same model makes it easy to switch between them and keep all other parts of the respective models equal—it would be difficult to keep up with making identical edits in both should that be needed. Also, having the alternatives in one model makes it easier to place them on sheets to show to the clients and get feedback.
