What are the principal advantages of creating a conceptual design model using masses before diving into the detailed design and building element modeling?

It allows the architect to play with different forms, shapes and sizes of a design model. It also helps to make sure that the building fits with its surroundings and has the right proportions before adding all the details. Once the exterior is well designed, the aesthetics, the form and function of the interior design will harmonize perfectly.

Should all buildings be modeled first using conceptual masses?

When is it needed/appropriate? And when not?

For example, should you create a conceptual mass model of a small house?

It can help by determining the best orientation for instance, but it is not necessary to create a conceptual mass model of a small house because the house can always be modified at any time without damaging all the work done in the interior, or at least less than in a bigger building. It is a possibility but no a requirement.

Can you think of any examples of a real building around the world that most likely was created by exploring the form using conceptual mass models?

Please post and share images of these examples to this Notion page.

I think that the Burj Al Arab was created first by exploring the form using conceptual mass models. It definitely required some thinking in order to coordinate the form and function of this building.
