Key Findings from the Interview

  • How do they define the term "sustainability"?
  • My mom defines sustainability as making our planet sustainable, long-lasting, and functional. She thinks that our planet will achieve sustainability when everyone can breathe fresh air and drink clean water.

  • What aspect do they care most about sustainability?
  • My mother cares most about pollution prevention in regards to sustainability. She believes that maintaining public health is vital and that everyone deserves to breathe fresh air. She wants future generations to experience Mother Earth in all her glory and wishes that we could have more green spaces in the community as well.

  • What actions are they taking towards living a sustainable life?
  • My mother said that we changed our house's roof to a Tesla solar roof so that we could generate renewable and clean energy. She believes that utilizing renewable energy is a key step towards making her everyday life greener. She's also growing many plants in her backyard garden (such as figs, lemons, and green onions) and uses the plants in her cooking frequently.

  • How would they like to foster a more sustainable lifestyle in the future?
  • Eventually, she wants to consume less meat and more greens instead. She plans on implementing a "Green Monday" program in her life to reduce her carbon emissions. She wants to grow more diverse plants in her garden and wants to take on composting as well.

  • What are their reservations or concerns about sustainability in today's society?
  • She is concerned about environmental injustice, where poorer and minority communities tend to receive unequal treatment when it comes to sustainability. She hopes that we can overcome these issues and allow for sustainable infrastructures and environments for everyone.
