Shirley ZhangOverview
Replace this text with your reflections on your design journey through class from a higher level and share your insights about the entire experience. What were:
- Key / Essential / Unique Design Features that you explored in your project.

Underground UCLA Station:
Accessibility and Connectivity
- Ensure seamless integration with existing transport modes, such as buses, shared bikes and e-scooters.
- Strategically place station entrance to replace the small loop in the existing cul-de-sac and recalibrate traffic including bus lines to use the main loop to provide convenient access points for UCLA riders.
- Implement accessible design features such as elevators and escalators, to accommodate individuals with disabilities or mobility challenges.
Passenger Flow and Crowd Management
- Design spacious and well-organized platforms, concourses, and waiting areas to accommodate high passenger volumes during peak hours.
- Incorporate separate pedestrian flows for entering and exiting passengers to minimize congestion.
- Consider integrating technology, such as dynamic signage and real-time information displays, to guide passengers and enhance wayfinding.
Aerial Ventura Station:
Accessibility and Connectivity
- Pedestrian bridge from platform presents opportunity to directly connect to adjacent development.
- Identify pedestrian access points to support walkability in neighborhoods.
Side-Platform Configuration
- Two entrances require two sets of vertical circulation (stairs, escalators, elevators), customer amenities(e.g. seating, signage, canopies).
- Best suited for on-street sites where there is limited space in street for station entries.
Visual Appeal
- Consider minimum and maximum height of guideway and relationship to adjacent buildings to protect views of storefronts, if possible, and to reduce the perceived bulk and mass of aerial structures.
- Bridges, columns, tunnels, and other transit support structures provide ideal locations for iconic and playful artworks, providing an exceptional rider experience for Metro’s expanding transit system.
- Your Big Successes -- what worked very well and what features you're most proud to share as examples to inspire others.
- understanding the design requirements for this real-life project and making the design as realistic as possible
- consider community impact and incorporate design components that address public preference
- Your Big Challenges -- what aspects of the project created the biggest challenges and what would you do differently (in hindsight) to avoid or overcome these challenges.
- my biggest challenge was understanding the scope of work and how much modeling/rendering is required to showcase the preliminary design
- another challenge is constantly updating the layout based on different station configurations I reviewed
- Lessons Learned -- what sage words of advice would you share with other students who are embarking on a similar project.
- Don’t be intimidated to tackle a unique / complex project! Glenn is extremely supportive and will absolutely help you get the project to a satisfactory completion.
