What are the principal advantages of creating a conceptual design model using masses before diving into the detailed design and building element modeling?

Modeling by masses allows us to use a top-down approach, which is beneficial in early stages of design (given primarily large-scale projects). It allows us to focus on specific key elements in our design, including size, material quantities and cost, and the overall form of our structure. By using masses, we can provide general ideas and estimates for these key elements to our clients and contractors. If we dove straight into detailed design, modifying our design to meet these aforementioned element requirements imposed by the client and/or contractors would become tedious.

Can you think of any examples of a real building around the world that most likely was created by exploring the form using conceptual mass models?
