What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations?
Using a single building information model is advantageous for designing additions because it allows architects to maintain some original features while also renovating others. One took that is frequently used is the “Create Similar” tool that allows builders to copy an element in the original design. By keeping all information in a single model, clients can also efficiently view the changes made during the building design process without having to switch over to different models. Lastly, it would simply be too time consuming for a builder to create a whole separate model instead of using a single building information model.
What sort of complexities are introduced when you construct a building complex in phases?
There are a number of complexities you have to account for when constructing in different phases. One primary issue that many builders face is trying to demolish in one phase without impacting the other. To avoid this, a builder must make sure that the phase they are operating in corresponds with where they are demolishing. Additionally, providing options for clients can be a bit confusing as well, so it’s always good practice to organize the options tabs well in your project.
In your project, which features of the proposed design did you choose to model as design alternatives?
I chose to alter the wall types in my design. While one option had alternating wall types, the other facade option featured a single wall type, that being curtain wall. There were certainly other features that I could have switched up, such as the roof I designed or the position of different tables and chairs. Ultimately, I felt like the contrast in walls best provided builders alternating options.
