What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations?

  • BIM already has the means to get muddled if information isn’t organized well in one document, if a project is spread across various model projects, everything becomes more confusing. In singular projects, there is the capability for the software to keep things connected for you, elements are less likely to get lost.
  • BIM is also confusing sometimes to read (especially from client’s perspective), going back and forth between model projects adds to this struggle in literacy.

What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling several proposed design alternatives for a portion of the building?

  • It is a cleaner and neater approach to displaying the information, one can simply toggle back and forth instead of opening up an entire new project.
  • Revit will keep track of elements across design sets which is very valuable and saves the designer a lot of time.
