What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations?

  • Why not create a separate model for the new proposed design?

One advantage of using a single building information model is that we can ensure the building form of the existing and the new building is consistent. Another advantage is that we can better understand the interaction between the current and new construction. If we have two separate models in the new proposed addition design, it could lead to errors in construction, and it would be hard to know how two buildings interact.

In your project, which features of the proposed design did you choose to model as design alternatives?

  • Why did you choose these building features? And what were the biggest challenges in modeling them as the design alternatives?

As my two design options, I made different arrangements for level two's interior walls. The first option, the primary one, is designed to have a larger collaborative workspace and two smaller group meeting rooms. The other option is designed to have two larger group meeting rooms and a smaller collaborative workspace.

I chose this because the client might have his own preference on the size of group meeting rooms and collaborative workspace. Thus, the client can see the 3D camera views of the two options and pick the one he likes as the final. The biggest challenge is that it is hard to design two good arrangements. I need to spend lots of time creating a smooth traffic flow, good size furniture, and a great view.
