Hello! I’m Adeline - I’m a first year graduate student in the Sustainable Design and Construction program. I grew up in Hong Kong then came to California for high school. My background is in architecture and structural engineering. I’ve worked as an architectural designer working on the design and construction of transportation and infrastructure facilities. I’m super interested in adaptive reuse, regenerative design, and building materials and figuring out how we can reduce the embodied and operational carbon of our structures.
I’m interested in parametric design because I see it as a very important tool towards optimization and in general just understanding the importance of generating many design possibilities more efficiently. As buildings and constraints become more complex, it’s no longer useful or feasible to just design one solution and immediately know it’s the best one when things change so much, which is where I see parametric design being very useful to adjust and create new solutions quickly.
In taking this course, I hope to learn how to use these various parametric design tools effectively to supplement my design process. I would also like to become more comfortable with scripting languages and the workflow of form creation. I especially would like to be able to take what I learn in this class and apply it to future designs to positively impact sustainability, not just aesthetics (though that’s cool too!)
