The Design Decision I Studied

The design decision I studied was capital cost vs. operating cost. I think this was an interesting decision to look at because it has economic, sustainability, and design implications. The input factors I chose to consider were the building height, the number of sides/wall faces, the size of the middle profile from which the form was lofted (determining if the building was convex, flat, or concave), and the thickness of the wall construction. The first three can be seen in the building form in Dynamo while the final one only affects the result.

The plot shows the tradeoff between energy cost on the X-axis and material cost on the Y-Axis. The size of the dots shows the solar value, with a larger dot corresponding to a larger value. The color shows the middle profile percentage, which describes the size of the middle profile of the form relative to the top and bottom. Blue is 100%, red is 90%, and green in 80%. The form selected represents a good value between costs and solar value.
