My structural system strategy is to first consider the design requirements e.g., what the minimum and maximum spacing between beams and columns are. Then I consider the load path and make sure loads can be continuously transferred from the upper levels all the way to the ground. For the columns, I size the ones on the bottom levels to be bigger than the ones on the upper levels because they will need to carry more load. For the beams I used the same sizes for all floors because the demand is similar.
