What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations?

  • Why not create a separate model for the new proposed design?
    • Using a single model can provide much-needed site and structural context to designers and developers. During the design process being able to work with the existing structure allows one to make more informed decisions about new structure (e.g. lighting, sight lines, etc.). With respect to clients, I think it’s also beneficial to present your design in context so they can clearly visualize and make decisions on what’s being proposed as opposed to having to have to make the mental leap of synthesizing disparate images/models of the existing and new structures.

What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling several proposed design alternatives for a portion of the building?

  • Why not create a separate model for each of the design alternatives?
    • I believe it’s likely much more time efficient to model all the design alternatives in a single model. Additionally, if you have several different aspects of your building portion that themselves have different design alternatives, it’s much easier to remix/combine them (as well as subsequently view them) in one model than to make an individual model for every permutation.
