I thought it would be interesting to have the bottom floor serve as a massive gallery space for student projects, and to have all the maker spaces just above the gallery. I created a shaft in the middle of the left wing (from this perspective) on the second and third floor and had the maker spaces on the second surrounding this shaft and made mostly of curtain walls so that the projects could be appreciated from the hallway, the floor below, and the floor above. I felt like the cafeteria would be the perfect branching element between the old and the new, since both sides will be needing to eat. The first floor of the cafeteria is where the food is served, and there is seating on the second floor, as well as on both sides outside; both floors of the cafeteria allow passage between the buildings. The middle section of each floor has storage, bathrooms, a printer room, small group social/work spaces, a staircase, and will house an elevator. The third floor’s left wing is entirely an open concept social/work space, and both the first and third floors also have rooms designed for a large-screen television experience with couches. The open roof actually leaves the first floor exposed to the elements (and all floors exposed to the wind due to the stairwells), so it may not actually be feasible, but I thought it looked cool; I added a closed roof option in case.
