Why is it important to accurately model the land features of your project site with a toposurface?

  • What aspects of a building design are most affected by the terrain features?
  • It is essential to accurately represent the land features with a topo surface because the building floor plans will vary depending on the surrounding topography. Not only that, the building form, materials, parking, and access points will be most affected by the terrain features. For instance, relatively flat terrain will allow easier access for parking and entering the building. Buildings on a steep slope require more waterproof materials and exterior drainage design.

When designing a project...

  • Should the building adapt to the terrain?
  • Or, should you adapt the terrain to the building?
  • When designing a project, I believe the building should adapt to the terrain. While proposing a design that fits in with the local topography, we can limit the soil excavation, removal, and disposal. Moreover, it also requires less work on the landscaping design. As a whole, utilizing natural terrain is eco-friendly, and it successfully reduces project costs and leads to shorter schedules.

Describe a case when it would be worthwhile to create a new custom component in Revit… How do you decide when customize versus using readily available components?

It would be worthwhile to create a new custom component if the component in Revit does not fit the room or space. Creating new components can fit our specific needs. For example, while the closet in the Revit library is too large and does not fit my room, I can customize a new closet, and the size will perfectly match my room. In this case, it is definitely worthwhile to create a new component.
