Module 3 - Points to Ponder

Why is it important to accurately model the land features of your project site with a toposurface?

It is important to model the exact features of the land through a toposurface because the base of the most is most affected. The issue is that the base of the house is secured on the ground and the level of structural integrity in different areas of the base depends on where the house is located. With miscalculations, we can have a higher or steeper slope that can cause structural failure of the house.

When designing a project...

It is equally important to adapt the house to the terrain and the terrain to the house. The priority is to understand the terrain and respect the land the house will be placed on. We do not want to make a house in a slope that will decaying every year. We can put the best structural system in the world, but is it worth it?

Why do stairs follow specific proportions with a set relationship between the tread length and riser height?

Building modeling understands a start and end to a set of stairs. Unfortunately, miscalculations of inches may lead to a very complicated problem for the contractor. The solution may be very expensive. We want to keep equal steps to have a smooth transition from floor to floor. A miscalculation can ruin this goal.
