What are the primary goals of creating a building model? Who are the key stakeholders?

The primary goals of creating a building model are to create a digital vision of the building plan that multiple people can keep up to date on and access from anywhere. The key stakeholders are the students assembling the building and the researchers working within it.

  • What do they need?
    • The students need an easily assembled building that they can create with minimal tools. It is difficult to bring large construction equipment to this site. The building also needs to be structurally sound and comfortable to work in for the researchers. It needs to have walkable corridors and proper arrangement of furniture.
  • What do they care about most?
    • The stakeholders care most about being to easily complete their work with minimal setbacks or challenges. The entire building should be designed with this in mind.

Many door and window manufacturers provide Revit families for doors and windows that you can specify for your building design.

  • What is the advantage to manufacturers for providing these families? (it's not free to create and provide them...)
    • By manufacturers adding their specific doors and windows to the Revit families, they can encourage designers to use their products. Designers are able to better create around the specifications of these specific products, and the manufacturer is able to advertise their product in a sense.
  • What is the benefit to you as the designer of using these manufacturer-provided families? Is there an advantage to using them versus the families provided in the Revit library?
    • By using these specific manufacturer-provided families, I can get a better sense of the final product of the building and ensure quality within it. The families with the Revit library are more generic and do not give as good of a sense of the usability of the actual final outcome.

What are the advantages of getting the Revit component families (for furniture, equipment, and fittings) directly from the manufacturer versus from an online sharing website like RevitCity.com?

By getting the Revit component families directly from the manufacturer versus an online sharing website, I can ensure better accuracy of the design with the building model. Components from the manufacturer are expected to have the same exact specifications in their Revit component as their manufacturing drawing. Models from online sharing websites may not have this level of accuracy. Further, I can ensure products are up to date as they could change by year or serial model.
