What are the primary goals of creating a building model? Who are the key stakeholders?

  • The primary goal is communication. With BIM design software like Revit, the communication method is mostly visual. It also serves as a way to work out ideas in real time, allowing rapid changes and thus making the design process much smoother. The stakeholders include the client, the architect, and the engineers. Creating a building model cuts down on errors down the line, and Revit in general is a very effective aide.

How much detail should you include in your building model? How do you decide?

  • The detail should increase as the complexity does. In the initial brainstorming stages, you do not need specific dimensions, you just need a general shape that fits within an area. Then, as you incorporate interior walls, you might want to consider the furniture that will be places within. Having general dimensions is always helpful, but too many can be overwhelming until you are ready to send it to someone else. When you are sharing the design, it is better to have more detail so there is no miscommunication, but it should be presented in a way that is clear and effective.

Many door and window manufacturers provide Revit families for doors and windows that you can specify for your building design.

If I were to use a manufacturer’s specific model in my Revit file, I would then also have to use it in the actual physical building. The reasons why I, as the designer, might want to use their models are manyfold: freedom, customization, availability, and cost.
