What are the primary goals of creating a building model? Who are the key stakeholders?

I think that the primary goals of creating a building model is to have access to the floor plan, roof plan, elevations, and sections capabilities of the modeling software because they are so accurate and exact. The key stakeholders are construction companies/workers who are physically making the building come to life and needs specific detail and dimensions in order to make the designer’s idea come to life.

How much detail should you include in your building model? How do you decide?

In general, I think it’s of best practice to include as much detail as possible in my building models so that anyone can easily look at my Revit file and easy understand what my intentions were. I decide what details I want to include as I develop my initial design and iterate because I want to make use of the software by getting all of my ideas down in one general place. I enjoy duplicating my models and make several versions of them in case I cannot decide what specific detail I want to choose. The key stages of building a model include drawing out initial ideas, making the first draft, continuing to iterate on the design, and making the design sustainable and compliant to any rules. I think as much detail that I can think of should be included at each stage. Most of the time I think I lack detail and forget to consider certain important things rather than put in too much detail.

What are the advantages of getting the Revit component families (for furniture, equipment, and fittings) directly from the manufacturer versus from an online sharing website like RevitCity.com?

I think that one of the advantages of getting Revit component families from the manufacturer verses online sharing websites is that getting component families from the manufacturer is likely a lot more accurate that online sharing websites. The component families from the manufacturer are guaranteed to have been extensively tested and improved. While online sharing websites have many very interesting and creative designs, the component families from the manufacturer are guaranteed to work, while the ones on online sharing websites are not.Â
