I designed this student center extension to balance continuity with innovation, offering two façade options and two ways to connect the new and existing buildings. The first façade option matches the original building, keeping a consistent look for a client who values continuity. The second façade option is a sleek glass curtain wall with a glazed roof, bringing in more natural light and creating an open, modern feel that encourages collaboration. For the connection, I designed an open-air skybridge as a simple, cost-effective option that lets students get fresh air while moving between buildings and allows for more outdoor café seating. The second connection option is a fully enclosed, glass bi-level link, which is better for colder weather and includes an indoor café extension for extra seating.
Inside, I focused on collaboration and flexibility. The building has large, open spaces for teamwork and dedicated maker spaces and project studios for hands-on work. Each floor has a print center and storage areas for convenience. On the third floor, I added a student lounge for socializing, watching TV, or getting coffee, along with a student gallery with partitions for displaying projects. There are also study spaces, including collaboration pods and private booths for video calls or quiet work. The second floor offers open and semi-open workspaces to encourage spontaneous interaction. Two staircases and centrally placed elevators ensure easy movement throughout the building. My goal was to design a space that is practical, inviting, and encourages creativity, while giving the university client options based on their needs and budget.
