What are the primary goals of creating a building model? Who are the key stakeholders?

  • What do they need?
    • A place for student researchers at a biological reserve
    • A workspace for researchers, a meeting area, a lab area, a storage room, a restroom, and lots of windows
  • What do they care about most?
    • Sustainability: Using solar panels, no heating/cooling system
    • Feasible to make by hand: Made out of wood

How much detail should you include in your building model? How do you decide?

  • As you develop your initial design?
    • Not as much detail, just enough to get a concept of the idea
  • As you continue to iterate and develop on your design?
    • As you get the basic shape, then focus on dimensions and how everything relates to each other. After all the requirements are met, then focusing on small aesthetic details is good.
  • What are the key stages?
    • Conceptual planning
    • Sketching
    • Walls - outside and indoor
    • Ceiling and Roof
    • Furnature
    • Windows, Materials
  • And how much detail should you include at each stage?
    • Increasing amounts of detail, with the least at the beginning where the idea is being formulated, and adding more and more as you go until it looks follows all the requirements and as much as time allows, looks good.

What are the advantages of getting the Revit component families (for furniture, equipment, and fittings) directly from the manufacturer versus from an online sharing website like RevitCity.com?

When getting them directly from the manufacturer, there is no doubt that they are the correct size, shape, etc., allowing for more precision than something that might look similar on RevitCity. This is very advantageous for projects because you can have the exact model that will be in that spot instead of a placeholder.
