What are the principal advantages of creating a conceptual design model using masses before diving into the detailed design and building element modeling?

It’s a lot easier to change and shift masses around then have to shift the walls, floors, etc. individually or each time you want to change something. With the masses, you can kind of work it into the form you want and the floors and walls are custom fitted to the shape.

Should all buildings be modeled first using conceptual masses?

When is it needed/appropriate? And when not?

No. It is appropriate in such large designs, where it really is crucial to do a top down build, but in smaller scales, houses for example, especially small ones, it would be counterintuitive to design it this way, and probably will take much more time than just drawing a few walls since the design is pretty simplistic.
