What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations?

  • Why not create a separate model for the new proposed design?

It is helpful to use existing building information to propose renovations because it allows for a sense of cohesion to be maintained between buildings in a structural complex. In this way, the new proposed design is inspired by the previous design.

What sort of complexities are introduced when you construct a building complex in phases?

  • What happens at the interfaces between the buildings as the phases advance?
  • How can you plan and prepare for these complexities as your create your initial building model?

I found it really tricky to make sure everything lined up. When building in phases, each new level is a separate phase. In order for floors and roofs to work properly, there must be proper alignment. I tried to account for this by duplicating the view from the previous floor and using it as a guide for the floor levels above. I also made sure to place walls very carefully at intersection points.
