What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations?

  • It's nice to see how the elements interact and I think you allow less room for error when you are using the same model and and see how the new features are distinct. I think you risk manipulating the original design if you were just to create another template.

What sort of complexities are introduced when you construct a building complex in phases?

  • As the phases advance elements are demolished or constructed. Complexities can arise in the area where the new construction is adjoining to the existing building. For me, it was really beneficial to sit down and draw on paper what I wanted to see first, because I didn't want to design as I went along just because you have to be mindful about not manipulating the initial existing structure. From a design standpoint, constructing a building in phases can pose complications in making the coherent and flow into one another.
