What are the principal advantages of creating a conceptual design model using masses before diving into the detailed design and building element modeling?

It can not only improve efficiency, but it can help you see your visualization before you actually start building. If you want to see what a certain form looks like, it makes it easy to see that without building walls and things first.

Should all buildings be modeled first using conceptual masses?

I don’t think that all building should be modeled using conceptual mass, however I do believe that large buildings are the time to do so. If you are making a simple home, it might make it harder to model than just using walls first, and also can take away from some intricate wall designs.
