What types of building information are best portrayed in 3D views?

Should your design ideas always be conveyed through photorealistic renders?

  • How does the level of detail in the rendering and its presentation affect the perception of stakeholders reviewing your design?

Not all the ideas should be conveyed through photorealistic renders. At the beginning of the design stage the project should be presented as a sketch or using a hidden line style that gives room for implementation of changes. Photorealistic renders are beneficial at the final stages of the design to make sure that all the design features have been implemented.

Name some applications where viewing the building and model information in virtual reality or augmented reality would be most beneficial?

  • Are there advantages to using a C.A.V.E as a virtual environment versus VR headsets?

I think viewing a building in VR and AR is very beneficial in real estate. This will save clients travel expense such as time and money. One of the examples is a platform called Matterport. Also, during design development using AR or VR helps the owner to visualize the space and implement changes before the start of construction.

The main advantage of CAVE is that it is a virtual collaborative environment which can be used by multiple people at the same time. VR headset can only be used by one individual.

How can schedule views be used to assist with procurement and model-based estimating?

Schedule views can provide material quantities and therefore assist with procurement. The quantities can be broken down in many ways, for example, by area, by floor, by the element type. When it comes to estimating using schedule views save a lot of time compared to taking off quantities using 2D drawings. The takeoff is also more accurate as opposed to a take off through on-screen take off tool. More accurate quantities can be obtained within minutes and therefore improve procurement. Also schedule views will reflect any design changes which reduces a chance of procuring unnecessary quantities.
