What are the primary goals of creating a building model? Who are the key stakeholders?
- The primary goals of creating a building model is to convey the ideas and plans before construction and commitments of a building. In order to address and communicate with the client (users/stakeholders of the building being designed) a model is use to draft and put into plan ideas of the architect and the client. The model helps build an understanding of what is needed and what is missing.
How much detail should you include about the composition (layers, materials, thicknesses) of your wall, floor, and roof assemblies at different stages of your design process?
- Conceptual design:
- Very little detail needs to be added in order to convey the concepts of the design. Themes and ideas can be conveyed by as little as wall placements or simple sketches.
- Preliminary design
- During a preliminary design, windows, doors, etc can be added, but measurements and details of each component does not need to be finalized. Rather, a more concrete understanding of the build must be established.
- Design development
- During the design development process, more details are now added and each component of the building, from material choice to precise measurements must be taken into consideration.
- Construction documentation
- The maximum amount of detail required for the construction of a building must now be added as to avoid flaws in the construction. Therefore, detailed specifications of walls, floors, roof assemblies, beyond just the architectural sketches and designs must be added.
What are the advantages of getting the Revit component families (for furniture, equipment, and fittings) directly from the manufacturer versus from an online sharing website like RevitCity.com?
- Using revit component families from the manufacturer ensures that your model stays true to reality. During constructions, the materials used will be from the manufacturers sourced, not revitcity.com. So while revitcity.com might allow for quick design process, it is not to be used in the final stages where construction is now being planned.
