My project featured large, compressed earth walls and two outdoor theaters. I explored the use of adobe walls to create an internally cool, and bright workspace and rehearsal space for artists based in Lagos, Nigeria
Big Successes
My big success was rendering the adobe walls and modeling the theater (Which I struggled a lot with). I was also able to use skylights and some artificial lighting to brighten up the otherwise very dark space inside the building.
Big Challenges
It was difficult to really think through and model the plumbing, and electrical system needed to support this kind of building. I definitely underestimated the time it would take to learn about the requirements of a performing arts space, especially given that it was designed to be used outside the US. I would have taken more time to learn about Nigerian building codes, as well as spent more time in general space planning.
Lessons Learned
This was a great project, and it would have been great to get deeper into constructability. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to explore a prefab construction solution but I would spend more time in the planning phase and sketching before modeling to really think about dimensions that lend themselves well to prefabrication.
