As previously noted, this building is located on the Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve. The long sides of the building face East and South, facing both the sun path and the lake. The goal for this stage was to finalize the building layout and the circulation systems. My thought process was as follows:
- First, I started with a bubble diagram for the first floor, marking all the spaces I felt were essential. This included aspects like the lobby, cafe, gift shop, kid’s zone, etc. This guided the layout of the first floor layout.
- From here, the remaining spaces were given more general guidelines that I thought were important for the second and third floor.
- Then, several ideas were utilized to design the remaining two floors. Firstly, I envisioned the offices being on a quiet wing of the building with a nice view. Then, I wanted to keep the teaching rooms as close together as possible. I felt that both of these were more private spaces so I preferred they were on the third floor.
- In addition, since the Exhibits are so large, I wanted to keep them off to the sides of the building so it does not split the wings too drastically.
- Lastly, I wanted the storage room near a set of stairs and the conference rooms together.
- A repeating core would consist of the restrooms, elevator, mechanical rooms, and stairs.
Using these ideas and estimates from the space planning spreadsheet below the building layout and circulation was completed. Please see the bubble diagram below:

Lastly, here are some quick views of my building and the schedule. Note the exits of the entrances and exits which were all measured and confirmed to be no more than 200ft from each room. Also, note the core which consists of restrooms, elevator, mechanical, and stairs can be seen as a repeating element across all three floors on the lower side.
Please see my Autodesk Construction Cloud link for a more detailed file. Moving forward I will explore incorporating slanted walls in the design and see if this is feasible given my other design goals.
