Overall HVAC system strategy

The HVAC system is a simple supply/return system. Each floor is meant to have its own independant supplier. This allows to not rely on one unic system for the whole building. However, it also makes it more complex to build and takes more space because it requires one mechanical room on each floor.

Heating and cooling strategy and implementation

I focused my attention on level 3 and also designed but not sized level 4. Following is my space schedule with the number of people and the airflow required for each room for both of these levels.

Note that for exhibition room 3 on level 4, the airflow requirement is not met. This is because my atrium is at this place and the airflow will be supplied on level 5.

This is what the design looks like for both floors:

HVAC system challenges that you encountered

  • Avoiding clashes with structural elements:

Havin a wooden structure, I had to consider the height of the wooden elements to make sure no clashes would exist between the ducts and the beams especially.

  • Auto sizing the elements:

This was the toughest part for this module. To make sure that all the elements were placed well enough so that even with auto sizing it would still work out well.

  • Space in the architectural model:

I did not expect the HVAC system would take that much space in the building. Even with a 15ft high floor, adding the floor thickness, the beams and the ducts, I do not have that much left over space. If i could start all over again, now that I know that, i would have much more element to decide of my design.

Other considerations:

I am worried about still having to add the electrical and plumbing system...
