  • the overall strategy was to use what already existed for the existing building. Assuming the structure was made of concrete, I aslo used as much as possible structural walls to avoid putting columns when not needed. For the 3rd to the 6th floor, i used a wooden structures to try to meet my design criterias. None of the beams are more than 25ft long as required. I also had to extend the structural floor of the ground floor to be able to put piles under it to sustain the new weight brought by the new structure built on top of the existing one.

  • structural columns were placed so that they were each time sustained by the column under it and never more than 25ft away from the closest other structural elements would it be other columns or structural walls.

  • The main challenge was to be able to sustain the 6th floor. Using a very thick floor added to bigger wooden columns and a 5ft wide concrete columns, I believe I have managed to make this floor resistant enough.
