Project goals

Goal 1: Use of sustainable/recycled material

• Measure:  percentage in volume of material that is either sustainable or recycled
• Targets:
• minimally acceptable value: 50%
• desired / target value: 70%
• Strategies:
• use at least 50% in surface area of the existing building
• use as much wood as possible for the structure
• use recycled steel if steel is needed
• use low-emission concrete if concrete is needed

Goal 2: Maximize green area

• Measure:  Green Area Ratio on the space where the building will be
• Targets:
• minimally acceptable value: 50%
• desired / target value: 70%
• Strategies:
• green roofs
• green areas all around the building
• green walls

Goal 3: Reduce energy use

• Measure: EUI, considering our building will be close to a library, EUI = 38 kBtu/sf/yr
• Targets:
• minimally acceptable value: reduce by 15%
• desired / target value: reduce by 30%
• Strategies:
• reduce lighting by using as much natural light as possible during the day
• orientable reflective panels on the roof
• direct light to heat up in winter and shadow to cool down in summer
• if no water around, add artificial lake to use evaporation to cool down the surroundings
