Some broad goals I am hoping to include in the project design include:
- Sustainable: having the space be potentially convertible for a different use in the future (ie not too specific to an exhibition space/museum); ideally working towards getting to a net-zero building
- Constructible: keeping design interesting but also practical to lower cost and resources needed
- Operable: smart building that will monitor site and allow for easy operability of processes (adjusting for daylight, heating/cooling, etc)
- Useable: accessible building, thermal comfort, encourages healthy behavior (staircases prominently placed), green roof living-learning lab
Goal 1: Minimize energy usage
- Measure: EUI (energy use intensity)
- Targets:
- minimally acceptable value: 45% reduction
- desired / target value: 65% reduction
- Strategies:
- passive design through orientation of building, overhangs, etc. to reduce amount of cooling/heating needed throughout the year
- leverage of daylight to reduce amount of needed artificial lighting
- Use of technology to monitor energy use throughout the day/year and automate processes within the building
- Solar panels?
- High R-value windows and proper, strategic insulation
Goal 2: Use of sustainable materials
- Measure: percent of recycled/sustainable material to new material
- Targets:
- minimally acceptable value: 60%
- desired / target value: 75%
- Strategies:
- Use of renewable materials such as locally sourced and certified timber, recycled materials, bamboo etc.
- Minimize use of concrete (specifically Portland cement); could use other type of sustainable concrete
Goal 3: Integrated into environment; minimal disruption to surroundings
- Measure: visual assessment/green area ratio
- Targets:
- minimally acceptable value: 60% green area
- desired / target value: 80% green area
- Strategies:
- Green spaces within the building - vertical garden/green wall
- Green roof to minimize the amount of impermeable space created by the building
- Native vegetation around the site and within the building
- Architecture of the building blends well into its surroundings
