The design is a mixed use space in Escondido Village graduate residences, to be positioned between the existing high rise new residential buildings. A critical aspect of the project will be the impact of the surrounding environment on the amount of light hitting the structure, either blocked by the larger high rise buildings around, or by the palm trees too. The impact of the surroundings in this way can be visualized as below in the solar study:
This provides the motivation for a dynamically changing building envelope, which can be manufactured only be a new fabrication approach, 3D printing, using either materials with programmable and dynamic opacities, e.g. melanin, or with changing shape via multimaterial printing.
In this close up, that is, the material composition of the area in grey, with a lower insolation and PV potential, would be different than the orange facade regions.
