It is important for the building and site to fit sustainability metrics, but I also want to think about the impact on the surrounding systems. I would like to include building metrics and also present goals about the impact on transportation and resources for my design.

Goal 1: Zero Net Site Energy

  • Measure:  Energy Use Intensity (EUI)
  • Targets:
    • minimally acceptable value: 30% reduction
    • desired / target value: 55% reduction (using AIA 2030 challenge for a Public Assembly building)
  • Strategies:
    • Use passive cooling and heating by analyzing the building orientation to decrease the amount of energy used by HVAC systems
    • Take advantage of daylight time to naturally light the building and decrease energy input used for lighting features

Goal 2: Reduce Single Occupancy Vehicle Trips

  • Measure:  number of SOV trips / year (within a radius of 50 miles)
  • Targets:
    • minimally acceptable value: 10% reduction in SOV trips / year
    • desired / target value: 20% reduction in SOV trips / yer
  • Strategies:
    • Implementing bike parking spaces on site to encourage cycling to the location (would consider working with the local authority to add a bike lane leading to the site)
    • Creation of a bus route to the location to encourage the use of public transportation

Goal 3: Increase Total Green Space

  • Measure:  Green Area (in feet squared) / Total Area (in feet squared)
  • Targets:
    • minimally acceptable value: 30% green area of total site
    • desired / target value: 50% green area of total site
  • Strategies:
    • Create green roofs on 30% the building area
    • Make use of outdoor exhibitions for the museum
    • Goal 1:

    • Measure:  the metric that you’ll use to measure this goal
    • Targets:
      • minimally acceptable value
      • desired / target value
    • Strategies:
      • one design strategy that I’d like to explore in my design to achieve this goal
      • a second design strategy for achieving this goal
