Design Journal Entry - Module 12 Wrap Up - Brian Rennie

Journal Entry For
Module 12 - Sharing Your Project

Overview

Replace this text with your reflections on your design journey through class from a higher level and share your insights about the entire experience. What were:

  • Key / Essential / Unique Design Features that you explored in your project.
    • A lot of daylighting with skylights and curtain walls on the south walls
    • Green roof
    • Smaller backs of buildings and less windows to minimize heat lost that way

  • Your Big Successes -- what worked very well and what features you're most proud to share as examples to inspire others.
    • I was able to get daylighting in every room
    • And no collisions between MEP systems, structural, and architectural design

  • Your Big Challenges -- what aspects of the project created the biggest challenges and what would you do differently (in hindsight) to avoid or overcome these challenges.
    • Coordination between all my built systems (MEP, arch, struct)
    • HVAC design was a big challenge, as some spaces did not get analyzed as Iā€™d hoped and I needed to do some by hand, as well as sizing the systems was tough and weavigin it through the structural design
  • Lessons Learned -- what sage words of advice would you share with other students who are embarking on a similar project.
    • Give yourself space for material changes and proper stacking/weaving of systems.
    • Implement as many passive techniques as possible to avoid collisions.
    • Think about features/fixtures (plumbing & HVAC) and how they connect when doing the bubble diagram for spacing.
