By exploring the architectural model, I think the designer’s goal is to bring an open space view for the dining area located on the east side and also maximize the natural light by adding the skylight. Also, there is one atrium, two stairs, and one outside patio to take care of. For this exercise, I choose to use the steel frame model because I can have a longer span and fewer columns to make sure the views are not blocked by the structural elements and keep the interior space clean. The size of the columns is W 10 x 33, with W 12 x 26 beams and W 8 x 10 joists. As shown in the figures above, there are no columns in the dining area and beams are not intruded in the atrium. However, I get some clashes and most of them are associated with beams are intruded with the interior walls as shown in Figure 3.
