My Process

Can I apply design-thinking mechanisms to building design?

Empathize

Who am I designing for and what does their life look like? What was their journey up until this moment?

  • Who will use this space?
  • How will they get there?
  • Why will they come?
  • How do they interact with and access art or education?
Define

Given my users’ journeys, what is the problem I’m trying to solve? Every engineered system (buildings, energy, transit systems) should have a purpose - a meaningful (wicked) problem they aim to solve. Otherwise, why are we engineering?

  • Humans have lost connection to our earth, viewing plants, animals, and organic materials as resources for taking and extracting without thought. How can I utilize this course/project to create a building that facilitates the regrowth of this connection, reminding people of the ties our ancestors had to their lands long ago? Or the ties native people had to this land before it was stolen from them?
Ideate
Prototype
Test

How can the success of my building be tested? What are the metrics I’ll use to evaluate success? How can I build these evaluation tools into my building

Iteration

How can I make my project adaptable to future design changes? How can I ensure continuous use in response to shocks and stresses? My building should change with time just as its users will.

Big Design Ideas
Innovative Building / System Features
  • Passive transport systems for water and energy
  • DSM
  • Greenhouses
  • Solar?
  • Gravity toilets
Building Fundamentals
  • Accessibility
    • metrics:
  • Functionality
    • metrics:
  • Sustainability
    • metrics:
Building Form and Massing
  • simple form, more complex facade
  • squares + rectangles, open spaces
  • sun room
  • native - without excavation/extraction
    • create “artificial” foundation to avoid excavating
    • should fit in with landscape
      • the exterior should be inviting for play
        • can I create a surface that is functional in more than one way?
