Final Recommended Settings
The final recommended settings include a 12/5 operating schedule, roof construction of R38, wall construction with R-38 wood, window-to-wall ratios of 95% for north and south orientations, 65% for east, and 30% for west, thermal properties of glazing surfaces with Dbl LoE for north and Trp LoE for south, east, and west orientations, window shading amount kept at the original value of 2/3 window height, plug load efficiency of 0.6 W/SF, lighting efficiency of 0.3 W/SF, both daylighting and occupancy controls employed, PV surface coverage of 90%, panel efficiency of 20.4%, and a PV payback limit of 20 years. Considering these settings, a predicted mean EUI of -6.83 kBtu/SF/yr was achieved, indicating a net-positive energy performance. This means that the building is expected to generate more energy than it consumes on an annual basis!
Design Thinking/Recommendation Process
Scenario 0: Baseline
Settings: using the starting point file, I have changed the Operating Schedule to 12/5 and the Roof Construction to R38.
Results: 53.9 kBtu/SF/yr predicted mean EUI
Scenario 1: changing only building envelope options
Setup (best recommendation): starting from the baseline scenario, I suggest the following.
- Wall Construction: R-38 Wood
- Window-to-Wall Ratio for each orientation:
- North: 95%
- South: 95%
- East: 65%
- West: 30%
- Thermal Properties of Glazing Surfaces for each orientation
- North: Dbl LoE
- South: Trp LoE
- East: Trp LoE
- West: Trp LoE
- Window Shading amount for each orientation: kept the original value of 2/3 window height (hence not displaying the graphs)
Results: 43.3 kBtu/SF/yr predicted mean EUI
Scenario 2: changing building envelope and power & lighting options
Setup (best recommendation): starting from scenario 1, I suggest the following changes.
- Plug Load Efficiency: 0.6 W/SF
- Lighting Efficiency: 0.3 W/SF
- Daylighting & Occupancy Controls: both employed
Results: 35.0 kBtu/SF/yr predicted mean EUI
Scenario 3: changing building envelope, power & lighting options + adding PV panels
Setup (best recommendation): starting from scenario 2, I suggest the following changes.
- Surface Coverage: 90%
- Panel Efficiency: 20.4%
- Payback Limit: 20 years
Results: -6.83 kBtu/SF/yr predicted mean EUI
