For my structural system, I wanted to utilize natural but strong materials, so I used southern pine Glulam beams and columns for this design. The max spans are around 25 feet, but certain portions are overdesigned because I wanted to place the columns in line with the openings. For openings like the elevator, I ended up just trimming and adding necessary beams. Going forward, I want to be more intentional about my column placement and optimize material efficiency. The columns are 5”x5.5”, the girders/main beams are 5”x11”s and the joists are 3”x5.5”. Upon further review, it looks like the offset depths for my beams are off, currently they are set at 5”, perhaps due to insulation/floor thickness I did not account for. I am looking forward to incorporating mass timber structural elements into my actual building design, but may need stronger material like steel if I want larger spans / cantilevers.
