Two outstanding exhibitions that come to mind are Yayoi Kusama’s Dots Obsession (Chicago WNDR Museum) and Neri Oxman’s Silk Pavilion II (MoMa NY)
Dots Obsession - Yayoi Kusama
Dots Obsession was a particularly fascinating installation. The more time you spend in the room, the larger, and more infinite it became. I think one of the features that made it so good was how interactive it was. As a stand alone exhibition, it is quite beautiful and mesmerizing. However, as soon as you as the viewer enter the room, the kaleidoscope effect begins and you are in for an amazing experience. Each side of the middle mirror displays a different mirroring effect, warping your own self and the room around you. The dynamism of her work really makes this piece special and one I will remember for my lifetime.
Silk Pavilion II - Neri Oxman
Silk Pavilion II is one of the coolest exhibitions I have ever encountered. Visually it is a stunning piece, both as a result of its size and the staging around it. The environment of the room it is housed in flows quite well with the sculpture’s form. However, what makes it truly remarkable for me, is its story. Silk Pavilion is the second of Neri Oxman’s silk sculptures woven together by thousands of live silkworms on giant rotating loom. Not only is the piece bringing to light the ridiculous number of silk cocoons boiled for a single cotton t shirt (a commentary on current clothing industry practices), it showcases the amazing ability of silk worms as designers and pushes the material boundaries of modern art.
