La Brea Tar Pits Museum
One exhibition I enjoyed was my visit to the La Brea Tar Pits Museum. Outside of the museum, there was a piece of grassland, and several sculptures of the animals that had been found in the tar pits were placed there. These sculptures created a feeling of interaction, which made me feel like I had stepped into the time and space where these animals live.
Inside the museum, the lighting was dim. The skeletons and bones found in the tar pits were arranged alongside their respective models. I remembered a wall of glass closets filled with the wolf skulls found in the tar pit. About 400 skulls were displayed on the wall; the astonishing number and the way they were arranged made it overwhelming to look at. I can't help but contemplate the lives that these bones might have had in the prehistoric era.
I believe one unique feature of this exhibition is the atmosphere it creates for the visitors. As stated by the museum, "A portal to the Ice Age in the heart of Los Angeles." The day I went there was sunny, and the tar pit was near LACMA. Just steps away, there are concrete woods, and everything represents modernity. Inside this museum, wild and mystical Ice Age stories were being told.
