My overall HVAC system strategy is to implement natural ventilation where possible, and use the HVAC system to heat during especially cold months. Since my climate requires heating at least 9 months out of the year but would only require cooling for about a month, I decided to focus the HVAC system on heat and use passive strategies to cool the building. I've included large windows on the south side of the home to let in a good amount of heat in the winter, while minimizing windows on the east and west sides to keep unwanted heat out in the summer time. I've also included thick concrete floors which can help absorb heat during the day and release it later at night, helping to lower the heating costs. To avoid cooling costs in the summer, I've placed the storage room, restrooms and break room in the underground portion of the structure. However, the office and atrium areas are all above ground, since these would easily become cold underground in the winter and people might be uncomfortable in these spaces.
