Journal Entry For
Module 4 - Conceptual Design - Building Context & Passive Design

The main aim of exhibition center design process is to meet the design requirement and also to validate effective cost to operate, maintain and provide comfortable environment without disturbing the surroundings of the site. To protect the soil and topography features on the site, reducing energy use in buildings and for lighting around buildings is also one of the main goal to achieve .

Conceptual Mass Modelling

My thought is to keep the form of the building simple and play in geometrical form so that I can add more sustainable feature to it but I will play in levels to make the form interesting and eye catching . This design has a circular atrium in the center and a  dome kind of skylight over the atrium to provide more natural lighting.

  • Insight

Energy efficiency measures  for this building includes use of insulation in external walls & roof, optimized window-to-wall ratio, efficient glazing, high efficiency water cooled chiller, & LED lighting and rooftop solar photovoltaic system. All these factors brings the Benchmark Comparison value near the Architecture 2030 by not increasing the cost of the building material.

The most important factors settings to reach building performance goals

  • Lighting Efficiency - 0.7W/sf-0.3W/sf

One of the major pros of using energy efficient lighting is the fact it uses far less energy than traditional lights.  Using LED lightings on all the places instead of traditional lighting could save 25%-30% energy which could reduce significantly electricity charges.

  • Plug Load Efficiency -  1.3W/sf-0.6W/sf

Plug load control strategies by tracking the plug load and controlling the plug load are two major factors to achieve plug load efficiency. Purpose to choose this option is to reduce the wasted energy, improve control and save money. Smart plug  could help to manage the plug load based on work schedule, weather conditions etc.

  • PV - Payback Limit-   30 yr

Photovoltaic (PV) companies give valuable warranties for PV panels in terms of both PV panel life span (years of PV life) and PV panels’ efficiency levels across time. PV panels can last up to 30 years or more so we have selected PV-payback limit as to 30 yr.

  • Daylighting & Occupancy Control

By daylighting  & occupancy controls lights can be automatically dimmed/turned off according to occupancy or available daylight.  Electrical equipment life will be increased by less use and provided configurable light levels relative to tasks. Its provide programmable, preferences to setup the schedule based on lighting requirements.  It provides security by configuring outdoor lights to automatically turn on between dusk and dawn,  and provide ability to configure security alarms.

  • Building Orientation

Changing the value of the building orientation in the insight there is not much impact on the benchmark comparison.
