Journal Entry For
Module 4 - Conceptual Design - Building Context & Passive Design

Location of Museum: Friday Harbor, San Juan Islands

  • No adjacent buildings on site
  • Reducing heating loads is one of the main goals as the climate is quite cold on average
    • South facing windows
    • Trombe walls to retain heat
  • solar
    • Solar potential is quite low overall given the site location
    • Building placed on higher ground in order to gain the most sun possible
    • Orientation of building is to optimize solar gain potential (summer and winter solstices shown below)
      • South facing entry/windows (long side of building oriented south)
  • 2-3 stories is the goal, views of the ocean are beautiful so want to focus on that
  • Connection to the outdoors
    • a walkway between the two sections of the lower stories
    • Rooftop deck/outdoor area for eating and relaxing
  • Further analysis needed:
    • Testing renewable options / costing
    • fine tuning massing to adjust for large surface area (challenge I had in massing)
  • Reduce lighting needed
  • Use thick walls and windows for greater insulation and protection from cold outdoors
