Journal Entry For
Module 4 - Conceptual Design - Building Context & Passive Design
Location of Museum: Friday Harbor, San Juan Islands
- No adjacent buildings on site
- Reducing heating loads is one of the main goals as the climate is quite cold on average
- South facing windows
- Trombe walls to retain heat
- solar
- Solar potential is quite low overall given the site location
- Building placed on higher ground in order to gain the most sun possible
- Orientation of building is to optimize solar gain potential (summer and winter solstices shown below)
- South facing entry/windows (long side of building oriented south)
- 2-3 stories is the goal, views of the ocean are beautiful so want to focus on that
- Connection to the outdoors
- a walkway between the two sections of the lower stories
- Rooftop deck/outdoor area for eating and relaxing
- Further analysis needed:
- Testing renewable options / costing
- fine tuning massing to adjust for large surface area (challenge I had in massing)
- Reduce lighting needed
- Use thick walls and windows for greater insulation and protection from cold outdoors
