Journal Entry For
Module 4 - Conceptual Design - Building Context & Passive Design

The location for this residential project is in Santa Ynez California. My initial inspiration behind this decision was the architecture of the brave and maiden winery in Santa Ynez. The seamless usage of natural building materials that brought to life a modern yet classical adherence to both the past and future of the Santa Ynez valley. In regard to my sustainability goals, I felt this was an optimal location given the substantial amount of intense sunlight this region receives on an annual basis. This also fell in line with my own personal values as I value time outdoors tremendously and desire to construct a residence that permits for such a lifestyle. Thus, I want to build into a more complex and naturally rich topography. given the challenging topography and my appreciation for simplistic design, I went with a simple shape and hope to add more structures of the like on the property. By accounting for the sun path and annual climate more specifically, I will situate the house in an optimal location for both comfortability and sustainability.
