Module 3 - Project Goals Targets & Strategies

Overall Idea: Design an exhibition space at Jasper Ridge focused on the environment, ecology and sustainability. The building has the goal to reach at least LEED Certification, and will blend naturally with the environment with its wood structure.

Design Goal 1: Use Sustainable Materials and Reduce Embodied Carbon

Measures

  • Measure embodied carbon through various online tools such as EC3 embodied carbon calculator
  • Perform LCA's / research LCA information

Targets

  • No VOCs used in any materials
  • No hazardous materials
  • Elimination of concrete, and non recycled materials

Strategies

  • FSC certified CLT structure and/or reclaimed wood
  • Sheep's wool insulation?
  • Recyclable materials: focus on end of life opportunities
  • Use resources to research leverage points (ex)
  • Keep transportation distance to a minimum to reduce emissions and costs

Design Goal 2: Positive Well-Being and Comfort For Building Occupants Through Biophilic Elements

Measures

  • Post occupancy surveys for occupants to determine well-being
  • Visual Assessment
  • Greenery and Daylighting Ratios

Targets

  • All spaces must be at least 70% lit through daylight
  • All spaces must have a view or direct interaction with greenery

Strategies

  • Open, daylit stairs to encourage walking
    • Potentially include extra intrigue with stairs related to exhibition (ex)
  • A lot of natural light
  • Greenery placed throughout site
    • Outdoor courtyards, indoor-outdoor spaces, views
  • Include places of refuge and prospect
  • Incorporation of texture on the interior through wood paneling and patina
  • Thermal comfort and air quality maximized through smart facades
  • Prius effect
    • interactive display educating about walking/biophila to encourage interaction with biophilic elements

Design Goal 3: Reduce Operating Energy Use

Measures

  • EUI (Energy used per year/area)
  • Use LEED Standards as a guide

Targets

  • Net 0 Site energy (produce at least as much energy as consumed on site)

Strategies

  • Building orientation and massing with relation to site
  • Façade and window placement / overhangs
    • South facing windows, Low-e
  • Lighting mostly through daylight
    • LED bulbs
  • Accurate operating hours
  • HVAC efficiency
  • Sensors for lighting and HVAC to optimize efficiency
  • Look at precedents to determine best massing/design options based on climate and site
